The Story of Life: A First Book about Evolution, by Catherine Barr

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 4—This introduction to evolution traces the planet's history from its fiery beginnings of thunderous volcanoes and lava 4.5 billions of years ago. The book covers the emergence of the first bacteria, the development of dinosaurs, mammals, and birds, and the appearance of humans and how they explored and evolved as the Earth warmed and people began to settle in different parts of the world. Through colorful, cartoonlike images, rendered in mixed media and collage, text bubbles, and captions, this informative story provides a window into the Earth's beginnings, natural selection and the concept of "survival of the fittest," and some of the possible causes of extinction. The authors have consulted Brian Rosen, of the Natural History Museum in London, making this book a solid resource for beginning reports. Back matter is useful and will leave children pondering issues such as climate change and endangered creatures. Time lines are clearly labeled in each section so that readers have an understanding of each historical period. Pair this with Steve Jenkins Life on Earth: The Story of Evolution (HMH, 2002) for a preliminary start to exploring this topic. VERDICT A suitable overview of the subject.—Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI

As a former preschool teacher and a current high school biology teacher, I was very excited to get my hands on this book. While it's super cute and I could see kids loving it to pieces, the teacher in me is disappointed. This book is more about natural history than evolution. The book does not talk at all about the mechanism of evolution - natural selection - even though it would have been very simple to do so in language children can understand. Oh! AND the book states that humans evolved from apes! Nooooooo! Cross that out. That is a common misconception. We are descendants of a common ancestor hominid, not "apes." So, if you're looking for a charming book on the history of life on Earth for your child, then yes, I recommend it. If you're looking for a book that actually explains HOW evolution occurs, keep looking.

Wonderful book with fun pictures. Several people have commented that it is too light on theory and should contain more discussion of natural selection. I want to give a different point of view and say that I appreciate the approach and applaud the authors for keeping the language simple. This book is 40 pages (most children's books for this age group are 32 pages). Everything is done with extreme economy. There is nothing that could have been cut out in order to make more room for a description of natural selection. In order to add more theory to the book they would have had to make it longer (publishers and parents both want short books), or they would have had to sacrifice the story. Highly recommend this book!

Lovely illustrations, good, simple and direct information for young minds to become introduced to scientific evidence. It does not cover everything, but is enough for my 4 and 5 year old grandchildren to ask more questions, wonder and learn about this very interesting topic of how life began on Earth. Very satisfied with purchase.

I bought this for our 7 year old as an introduction to the concept of how the earth evolved. She is interested in the topic but we have struggled to put things out there for her in a concise way that she can understand. We all love the illustrations and it really helps the reader visualize how much has changed over time. I would highly recommend to any kid around 5+.

Our daughter is obsessed with this book. It is a great, age appropriate book describing evolution. My daughter is 5 and has been able to understand the concept thanks to this book. Answered lots of a questions and now a favorite for bedtimes in our house.

Wonderful way to begin to explain these topics to my five year old. She's been asking a lot of questions about dinosaurs and humans after a visit to the museum and this book was a great find.

My three year old daughter loves all things dinosaurs, reptiles and science. She absolutely loves this book and has had me read it over and over. Great first book about evolution. Adorable pictures. Just enough information for a younger kiddo - but I also learned new things too!

We just received the book today and already read it. My 6yr old loved it and it was easy for him to follow. It doesn't explain how the world began but starts a little after. I'd say it's great for k-3rd graders, but does have large words so i wouldn't recommend it for a read on your own book for those ages.
